Other fun and interesting happenings:

Even though the snow was scarce this winter, I did make it cross country skiing one time

I was also able to spend some fun times with my friends while on my temple trips to Idaho and Texas.

Danielle, Kirk, and Chase at Chase's basketball game.

A very thoughtful gift from Danielle from the Container Store.

Austin food trailers with cousin, Macy Robison

Alamo - got to see the basement. Ha Ha Pee Wee!

Hanging with the Staylyns (Suzanne and Jonathan) on 6th Street in Austin, TX.

Check out Suzanne's t-shirt - see I told you there was a basement!

I'm so pleased with this can crusher which was installed in my pantry. I use it every day!

These totally gross birds made my patio their home and I'm too grossed out and lazy to stop the perpetuation of this nasty species. Anyone else want to help out?

Until next time, folks. I promise to post those Cooking for One episodes before too long.

Almost exactly 6 months ago ...

I had two major ligaments repaired in my knee.

Almost exactly 9 months ago ... I cut out sugar and flour from my diet and lost 70 + lbs.

So this triathlon was kind of a big deal for me. I wanted to beat my previous times in each of the three events and I sorta did ...

The weight loss was going to make it easier and the knee was going to make it harder. I took an ibuprofen before the race and was able to run. The knee definitely hurt especially because they had us run up and down a bunch of the hills behind the state mental hospital and that was not good for my knee. Running and biking and swimming have been so much easier and enjoyable now that I'm carrying 70+ less on my frame.

These boys (including baby Milo who is behind Van) and their mom came to support me. Although after the bike they were waiting for me to cross the timing mat but I got confused and missed the mat and just hopped the fence so I could go directly to the pool. So they waited and waited for me and never got to see me jump in the pool ... but they did get to see me run out and to the finish line.

I did well on the bike and I really tried to push it. As I was finishing and turning back into the park, I saw a tall man walking along Seven Peaks Drive in a red baseball hat, listening to his ipod. I yelled out at Larry who wasn't even there to cheer me on but just happened to be on his regular morning walk. It was sorta like I was cheering him on.

Here are my times:

Somehow, even though I missed the mat, they came up with a swim time for me. I did really well on the swim although it was quite annoying because I couldn't really get in a rhythm with the narrow lanes and all the bodies in my way. I literally passed at least 10 people and no one passed me. So although I was slower on the run, I made up some time on the bike and swim and passed quite a few people.

Here are my other sprint triathlon times ... the 5K on the Telos triathlon is much easier than this one and the bike ride is only 10 miles, not 12 so ...

My favorite part of the race was as I turned on to Slate Canyon Drive and at the top of the hill I looked out as the sun was coming up. I saw dozens of bikers pushing up the hill with the fields of gold behind them. It was beautiful ... I wish I could have taken a picture but I did take a mental picture that I hope never leaves me. I'm so excited for more beauty and fun in my future!

Remembering Drew - Turkey Triathlon

My friend, SaraJoy designed this using last year's design and modifying it.

We will be participating again this year in the Telos Turkey Tri in honor of Drew's memory. Anyone is welcome to participate, support, or buy a T-shirt. If you want a T-shirt, comment on this blog, or email me (katy_knight@mac.com) and let me know what size you want. Cost will be ~ $15.

I eat you Spudman ....

Last week at this time I was pumping up my tires, setting out my shoes, and trying to squeeze into my wet suit for my 7:30 AM start time.

This was my first Olympic distance triathlon and I was nervous. I knew I could do the 1 mile swim and the 26 mile bike ride. But to run about 6 miles after both of those events was going to be hard and I was right.

SWIM ...
One of the reasons the Spudman is such a popular event is because the swim is so easy. I had never swam a whole mile in open water before, only in a pool, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Well it was a great swim, very refreshing, and over before I knew it.

BIKE ...
The bike was fine. The course was on mostly flat, country roads. It just took a while to complete. I am slow and so I may have only passed one or two people the whole ride. I was passed by numerous bikers from heats after mine. This was actually a great thing because so many of these bikers that passed me gave me words of encouragement. These triathletes are a friendly, nice bunch. My friend, Ryan (the Ironman, swim coach), passed me and his heat was 30 minutes behind mine.

RUN ...
I parked my bike at the transition station and my legs felt like jello. Are you kidding me that I have to run 6 miles now? And in the heat? This was by far the hardest part. I probably ran about 50% of the course and walked the other half. I just didn't have enough in me. I didn't feel too bad because there were a lot of walk/joggers around me and most people seemed to be struggling. I think most of the tough runners had already passed. On the run I saw my friend Emily who was cheering on her husband, Aaron. She snapped a few photos of me:

It was fun because a lot of the people that live along the run route in Burley, ID were out spraying down runners as they passed. I loved that. It felt good.

At one point on the run, I stopped at a water station and the teenage boy volunteer said to the other teenage boy volunteer, "this isn't fun anymore." I jumped in to their conversation and said, "yeah, no kidding." They got a good chuckle and I still had 4 miles left.

I was happy that there were so many heats and that mine was toward the beginning ... it is possible that I could have come in last.

I did finish the race and boy was I glad to have that over. The night before was fun because Liz and I ran into Ryan and some of his friends and we ended up sleeping at Hailey's house in Burley which was very convenient, much more convenient than what we had arranged. It was fun to meet such nice, fun people who were also gonna do the race the next morning.

We drove home right after the race and I ate the potato they gave me for dinner. I went to bed at 9:00 PM that night and slept better than I had in months. I'm going to try and get in again next year and my goal will be to run the whole time.
